September 23rd 2010: The New York Knicks sign Shawne Williams
The New York Knicks originally signed Shawne Williams to a training camp contract. Originally, he fought for one of the final roster spots alongside Patrick Ewing Jr. It was Shawne that ended up winning the final roster spot.
For GM Donnie Walsh, this was another one of his former Indiana Pacer reclamation projects. Williams fell into trouble in his previous stints with the Pacers, Mavericks, and the Nets. With the Knicks, however, Williams found a new sense of focus and urgency. He averaged a then-career high 7.1 points/game and 1.3 threes/game in 64 total games. He was an important cog in Mike D’Antoni’s rotation who could stretch the floor and hit threes.
After the season ended, Williams took a two year offer sheet and signed with the New Jersey Nets. He spent less than 3 months with the Nets before the team dealt him to the Portland Trailblazers in the infamous Gerald Wallace trade. Since then, Williams spent stints with the Detroit Pistons, Miami Heat, Los Angeles Lakers, and various teams overseas. He’s even spent some time playing in the Big3.
Williams has found more recent notoriety as the fiance to Love and Hip Hop Atlanta star Jessica Dime.
