Kyle O’Quinn is reportedly opting out of the final year of his contract, making him a free agent. But the Warriors have limited funds to get him, only the $5.3 million taxpayer mid-level exception. Do they want to spend all of that on a big? O’Quinn is expected to get larger offers than that in free agency, including from the Knicks.
But there is a connection between the Warriors and O’Quinn. They wanted to draft him out of Norfolk State in 2012 after they really liked his workout with the team. But the picks they had didn’t line up with his value. He was a projected second-round pick and the Warriors went with Draymond Green at No. 35. O’Quinn went No. 49 to Orlando.
In a chat with O’Quinn in January, when the Knicks visited Oakland, he fondly remembered wanting the Warriors to draft him and talked about how the Warriors’ style of play fit his game.
