Alex Bazzell, a trainer who has worked with Trae Young since last summer, sees that playmaking and passing ability as a strength.
In working together this spring, Bazzell says Young has been pulling from several point guards in building his game. They’ve imitated how Steve Nash and Chris Paul come off ball screens and lose defenders. They’ve worked on his mid-range shot, watching how Damian Lillard has used his shoulders and played physically. Kyrie Irving was used as an example of how to finish around the rim.
There are parts of Curry’s game they have worked on, too. Curry has an excellent ability to separate himself in space and get into the lane, and the next part of Young’s maturation will be to work on rotations, making cross-court passes and relocating to a new spot on the floor.
